Blankets I Have Known: The Giraffes

I'm not in the practice of making baby blankets, mostly because, until this point in my life, I haven't known a lot of people with babies. Also, I cannot be counted on to finish anything in a timely manner unless someone is paying me for it, and even then it can get a bit dicey.

I made this in the summer of 2003, right after I graduated from college. It was a lonely summer, living in a sad little basement apartment by myself. I only knew one other person in town, and I used to spend evenings after work driving around my new city and getting lost in parking lots. It was a sad, sad time. But at least I made this awesome blanket:

Can you see that? Those are giraffes. Giraffes! Crocheted right into the blanket!

I have no idea where I got this pattern, but I distinctly remember how this blanket was made. You crochet on the right side only. That means you cut your yarn at the end of every row, which gives you fringe. The raised bits (the giraffes and diamond border) are done with treble crochet. And unlike our friend Knitting, when you screw up a giraffe four rows down, you have to unravel everything to fix it. Never. Again. It really is a thing of beauty, and I'm sad I have such crappy pictures of it. But, hey, giraffes! On an afghan!
