The summer issue of Interweave Knits arrived yesterday, and for the first time, well, ever, there are actually things in it I want to make (I'm not much of a summer knits kind of girl). Both are presenting problems, though. Help me?
The first is the Pebble and Reed tunic.

I don't know why, but I love this shirt. Love. I think it'd be good for Autumn post-baby wear, and I can see myself wearing it a lot. The yarn used is Rowan Purelife Revive, and the problem here is that it's more than I want to spend. I need 10 skeins (eight for the body, two of a contrasting color for trim), and it's $10.95 per skein. Bah. Can anyone out there think of a more economical substitute? Mama's on a budget here. Now, I would get the Webs discount because I'd be spending so much, and that would take 20% off... Normally, I would just go into my stash, but I don't really have any non-wool that would work. But I DO have Elsbeth Lavold Silky Tweed AND Silky Wool in many colors. Internet, did I just solve my problem?
The other pattern from this issue that I love is the Dockside Cardigan.

This is knit with Cascade Heritage, a very lovely, economical sock yarn. I would most likely need five skeins (my in-house measure-er isn't home to measure across my back), which would only run me about $60. Again, good post-pregnancy sweater, and good year-round cardigan.
Alas, the problem here is color. I'm not even sure I like any of the colors offered. I'm so used to wearing black and grey and brown that when it comes to picking out an actual color-color, I just get stumped. I could go for Blood Orange, Moss, and either Plum or Italian Plum (the latter seems a little brighter). What say you?

Super cute! I absolutely love the teal colored one. Thanks so much for sharing!
My two cents worth: skip the tunic, unless you can find a cheaper yarn. Why make something that costs that much, when you're not even sure you're going to like it once you've finished? You could spend that much on something off the rack that you know will fit well because you got to try it on first. Thats always how I decide anyway... Secondly, I'd totally go with the plum for the cardigan - it will look absolutely lovely! The moss is nice too, but I think the blood orange, although also nice, would be a bit too far out of your comfort zone and less likely to be worn because of it. I remember being pregnant with my first, and wanting to go 'out of my comfort zone' in terms of colours for clothing (I was a black/grey/white girl too!) - I ended up buying a bright orange shirt, and never wore it. Sanity kicked in by the time I got home ;-)
Hope this helps, sorry it was so long. And if you don't like my ideas, feel free to ignore!!
I don't know the person who wrote the last post but whoever you are, you gave Kristin VERY good advice. Are you a mother? If not, you should be. If you are, I hope your kids appreciate how good you are at giving fashion advice!
Actually, yes I am a mum (in New Zealand, hence the spelling ;-P) My boys are only 6 and 8, so they have no interest in fashion! But they will definitely not wear anything I make for them. They're still learning...
I also like the plum and the moss best. I can see the orange as an accent color somewhere, like a shawl, but not in a cardi that you probably want to wear with other colors/patterns.
I love the Italian Plum. It would look fabulous on you!
I'm envious of your crazy knitting skills. Maybe one day I'll give knitting another sincere try. I want to make myself some nice socks... Maybe in the Fall. Too many quilts to work on!
You know, my IK arrived a couple of days ago and with all the MDSW craziness, I haven't managed to flip through it yet. I do like the two patterns you've picked out, so I'm going to make a point to get it out and look through it after the toddler goes to sleep tonight.
Also: Baby? Pregnancy? Did I miss something? (Well, clearly.)
thanks for the information , Now I know about foursquare, your blog is good, I like it-Casio replica UK
