Her current pair is atrocious

The nice thing about best friends is that you can say things like, "Those mittens are in an awful state. You need to burn them immediately," and they'll be all, "You know, you're right. Into the trash they go."

When I got to see Abby over Christmas last year, I was in a state of shock - SHOCK, I TELL YOU - over her mittens. They were store-bought, worn-through, shabby and completely unchic. If I was the one wearing them, nobody would blink an eye. But Abby is very stylish and adorable and has a much fancier life than me. Instead of lamenting the state of her handwear out loud, I made a mental note to make her mittens for her birthday.

Red Red Grove

Another pair of Groves. I do love this pattern, but I may be falling out of love with Cascade 220 Superwash. I can't tell you how many breaks in the skein there were towards the end of the second mitten - at least one a yard. I was a very angry little knitter and was more than happy to finish them (way ahead of schedule for once, too).

I'm happy now that Abby has a fresh pair of mittens to keep her warm during her new hour-long commute, and even happier that she was able to open them on her birthday (and that she agreed to immediately throw out the old pair). It's like holding hands halfway across the country, right? (Yes, I AM that cute.)

It IS like holding hands!
I LOVE these mittens! Thank you for giving them to me. They are beautiful, and they fit perfectly.
I did throw those old mittens away. Dave thanks you for that, btw.
Excellent gift!!
